Step-by-Step Troubleshooting PTZ Controller Drift

What to do if your PTZ controller is encountering drift ?
Drift is one of the most frustrating things for PTZ camera operators to experience, because your ability to control your camera is limited and unpredictable.

What is camera drift?

Drift on a PTZ controller is when the camera slowly moves or pans on its own without your operating or even your touch. Typically, it means the joystick is sending small, unintended movement signals even when it’s in a neutral resting position. This causes the PTZ camera to pan, tilt, or zoom slowly on its own. Sometimes, one of these mechanisms can feel stuck and your camera movement runs away on you. When you attempt to rope it in, it runs away again. At times, it can feel like you are fighting to steady your camera.

I first encountered drift with a BirdDog PTZ camera controller and although the drift had grown progressively worse over months, the production house that owned it refused to send it to repair or to buy a new one.

What causes camera to drift?

Typically, camera drift is related to joystick calibration, hardware wear and tear, or firmware bugs.  Some PTZ cameras like Birddog have joystick calibration upon startup and you need to initialize movement, as fi you were entering a motion password! If you fail to do this, your camera might feel bricked and you cannot move it.  If you encounter drifting, first check if your camera requires joystick calibration.

Below is a detailed troubleshooting guide to fix or isolate the issues

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting PTZ Joystick Drift

1. Recalibrate the Joystick (Software Reset)

The joystick might be out of center alignment. This tells the controller what “center” is and cancels out any false signals from a loose joystick.

How to Recalibrate your PTZ joystick:

  1. Power on the controller

  2. Go to the Menu

  3. Navigate to System Settings > Joystick Calibration

  4. Follow the instructions: Usually you’ll be told to leave the joystick centered and press a confirm button. If it’s a Birddog, as I mentioned earlier, you need to know the directions to initialize movement.

  5. Save and exit the menu

  6. Power cycle the controller

2. Check for Physical Damage or Sticking

If it physically won’t stay centered, internal components might be damaged. You’ll need to contact Marshall for repair or replacement.

  • Gently move the joystick in all directions and let it return to center. If it feels sticky, uneven, or loose, the spring mechanism may be worn.

  • Blow compressed air around the base to remove dust or grime

  • Avoid placing the controller on uneven or vibrating surfaces

3. Isolate with Another Camera

Test with a different PTZ camera:

    • If the drift follows across different camera models, it’s the controller

    • If only one camera shows drift, it might be a camera firmware issue

4. Update Firmware

Check for firmware updates from your camera manufacturer. Sometimes, early firmware builds have joystick calibration bugs

  • Check their website’s support page and search your controller model for any firmware downloads.

5. Reset Controller to Factory Settings

If drift persists despite calibration, the last effort is this. Keep in mind, you may lose any camera setting or presets, so do not enter into this lightly.

  1. Go to Menu > System > Factory Reset

  2. Confirm reset

  3. Reconfigure your camera IPs and settings afterward

5. Contact or send it into the manufacturer for repair

Provide them with:

    • Your PTZ Model

    • Firmware version (check in System Info)

    • Description of the drift behavior

Temporary Drift Fixes

If you can’t resolve your camera drift immediately:

  • Don’t use the joystick if you can.

  • Try to recenter the joystick. Sometimes, a light tug and let go of the joystick can remind it of its neutral center.
  • Control the camera with preset buttons only

  • Reduce joystick sensitivity via menu to dampen small drift movements

  • Control the camera and its drift through Stream Deck. Download their free Companion software. It allows you to program your cameras to Stop and assign it to a stream deck button.  You can also program operator movements such as pan/tilt and zoom to your buttons.
